Watch the young violinist Nicola Benedretti spin out music by John Williams and Bach in sweet and soulful tendrils of sound at the Tiny Desk.

There are plenty of things you can say about this piece, but there’s the coolest thing I learned: there are sections of this and other work by Lutosławski that he refers to as “chance”— they are not conducted, and each musician “performs his part as if playing alone and not coordinated with the other performers.”

According to the composer, “This gives quite specific results, ‘flexible’ textures of rich, wayward rhythms, impossible to achieve in any other way.”

Cool.

"Leading without a score, the conductor captured [Brahms’ Second Symphony’s] radiant..."

“Leading without a score, the conductor captured [Brahms’ Second Symphony’s] radiant pastoral atmosphere, with lightness in the strings and warmly sounding horns.”

-
Review: Järvi is back, CSO’s Brahms is inspired | Cincinnati.com | cincinnati.com

Something I learned this week: Brahms would have hated you referring to this piece— or any of his works— as pastoral.

From our program notes:

“Brahms, who did not believe in program music, would never have called a symphony Pastoral and he would no doubt be annoyed with commentators who find the D Major Symphony reflections on the peaceful countryside in which it was conceived. But there is no denying that, if any of Brahms’ symphonies deserve to be through of as pastoral, this is the one.”

Tonight, after the Brahms Symphony No. 2 concert, I got to...

Tonight, after the Brahms Symphony No. 2 concert, I got to introduce conductor Paavo Järvi to two fellow Estonians.

We were thrilled to attend the surprise Pop Up Performance with Branford Marsalis today in the Westin Atrium.
students in grades 5-8 and explore the impact of jazz, popular song, folk tunes and hymns on orchestra music in the United States.

The concerts are part of a week-long residency that Marsalis will spend with the CSO as this season’s creative director of the Ascent Series.
